Far East

Posted by Leanne on October 17, 2006

After failing miserably to book anything to do on my second day in Byron Bay, I went for a walk down the joss stick smelling streets and along the beach, then up a big hill to the lighthouse (with no water or sunscreen). passing the most easterly point of mainland Australia on my way. This is a picture of the view just before I got there:

The sun started to come out as I got to the top, so I walked back through the shaded foresty bit where I saw something that looked suspiciously like a snake disappear into the bush…

Byron Bay

Posted by Leanne on October 16, 2006

Arrived in Byron Bay early this morning after 12 hours on the night bus. It was raining which is not a good look for a place which is based around the beach.

Found this little fella sitting on a wall near the hostel.

Bloody Seagulls

Posted by Leanne on October 15, 2006

On my last day in Sydney, I finally made it to Manly, where I spent a pleasant afternoon on the Manly scenic walk. Then why, I hear you ask, have I chosen a picture of a seagull for today instead of some lovely scenery?

Let me explain: my Rough Guide recommended that, in order to make a trip to Manly beach complete, I should have some fish and chips on the beach. Despite the fact that it was a bit of a dull day (weather-wise) and the sea breeze actually made it quite cold, I couldn’t argue with my travel guide, so purchased some fish and chips and sat down with this bird to eat it. As soon as I turned my back, the little bastard nicked my fish and went off to share it with its evil mates. I was not happy.

Da Blue Mountains

Posted by Leanne on October 14, 2006

Apparently, a visit to the Blue Mountains is a must when in the Sydney area of Australia, so I went on a daytrip there. They are called the Blue Mountains, because on some days, the Eucalyptus trees create a blue haze that lingers in the air above the mountains. This isn’t a picture of the Blue Mountains- its a bicture of a bloke playing a didgeridoo at Echo Point. You can’t see it here, but behind him is a great view of ‘The Three Sisters

Digeridoo

I also saw some wild kangaroos.

Choo Choo!

Posted by Leanne on October 13, 2006

Strangely enough I only took 2 pics today, neither are very interesting. This one is of the pool at the Railway YHA, which I moved into today. It’s called the Railway YHA because it’s right next to the railway station, and some of the dorms are actual train carriages. From about 6am, you can hear the real trains being announced at the station.

Bondi Beach

Posted by Leanne on October 12, 2006

When I woke up this morning, I didn’t intend to go to Bondi Beach- I was going to spend the day in Manly. I spent too long dithering around buying myself a YHA card and booking myself into a new hostel in a more central part of town so by the time I was ready to go, it was too late. So it was on Bondi that I saw my first real live surfers. This photo makes it look like there weren’t many people around. In reality, Sydney was having a heatwave, and it was packed.

Also took some night time photos of the opera house which look really pretty. But we’ve all seen the opera house before…

Taronga Zoo

Posted by Leanne on October 12, 2006

I took some better pictures than this at Taronga Zoo, there’s one of a seal and one of an orangutan that I particularly like but this is probably the best to portray how amazing Taronga Zoo is, I mean, how often do you see a giraffe against the Sydney skyline?! Probably better if I could have got a kangaroo or koala in there but you can’t have everything!

Mmmmmm Pie

Posted by Leanne on October 11, 2006

This is a picture of a pie from Harry’s Cafe de Wheels, in Sydney. Though I did have some toast for breakfast at the hostel, I class this as my first meal in Australia. Australians love their pies and these ones are very special. This particular specimen is a steak pie with mashed potato, mushy peas and gravy on the top.

I also went for a walk to the Sydney Opera House today but everyone’s seen pictures of that!
